Activities in the Northern Islands

The youth hostel “ÍBÙД is the only youth  hostel  in the Northern Islands, and is centrally located in Klaksvík, only a few hundred metres from the ferry berth. That means, that it is easy and convenient to visit the other islands, without searching for overnight accommodation. The 8 to 10 daily  ferry services take you to Leirvík, from where buses take you to Tórshavn, the airport on Vágar and many other places.  From the same ferry berth near the  youth  hostel  you can reach Kalsoy by boat and there are frequent bus departures to Viðareiði, the most northerly village with the highest cape in the world, Enniberg, 752 metres above  sea level . If you get out of the bus in Hvannasund , it is possible for you to visit Fugloy and Svínoy by boat. An unforgettable experience is a trip by helicopter , which is  fairly expensive. There are connections to Svínoy and Fugloy. A true “wanderer” will enjoy the many walking tours which start from  the youth hostel.
The angler has the possibility of being independent with food from the fishing grounds just 1 km. from the youth hostel. If you are fond of fish, whether you can catch it yourself or buy it, you will find that many different kinds in the Faroes have an excellent taste.

Some tour proposals
by Claudine Hollinger from Switzerland, 16/05/1999

I think that the Northern Islands are the most beautiful part of the Faroes… If you like the contrasts between high cliffs and sea, the beauty of nature is really worth a longer stay in Klaksvík!

Múli:
My first tour was- by hitchhiking to the small village of Múli, from where I enjoyed the view of Viðareiði and the northern cliff of Fugloy. On the way to Múli there are four impressive valleys, in Fossdalur there is a beautiful waterfall.

Viðareiði is worth a visit, of course. Walk – passing the stonewalls – north towards Villingardalsfjall … and you will see the northern cliffs of Borðoy, Kunoy and Kalsoy. To the east, you will see Fugloy, part of Svínoy and a mountain which belongs to Viðoy. The best view in this direction is from the place where the river Dalá crosses the small road south of Viðareiði.
An interesting tour for “landrats” is the boat excursion to Svínoy and Fugloy (departure from Hvannasund). See how the people from Fugloy have to reach their island. …. For centuries they have lived there, without any place you really can call a harbour. I made this tour twice. The first time the man from M/F Másin decided, not to go by rowing boat on land (and the milk for the island went back with us to Hvannasund), the second time a seaman and his son were taken ashore near Kirkja. The sea in Fugloyarfjørður is always rough; take some good pills with you, if you´re not used to it!

Kunoy is also worth a visit. Hitchhike to Haraldssund and visit the old part of this nice, colourful village. Through the tunnel (opened in 1988) you reach the lovely village of Kunoy. There you can see many nice houses and an old watermill, and there is also a little plantation. The  rocks over Kunoy are impressive and “crazy beautiful”. You can walk north in the outlying field and have a good view over the fjord to Mikladalur.

Kalsoy:
Anyway, Kalsoy is for me one of the most beautiful islands I  know. You already saw it from the ferry, when you came from Leirvík. Walk to Klakkur (413 m) west of Klaksvík (an easy walk) and enjoy the view over Kalsoy.- See the island from Kunoy…. And the best: visit it!
One of the most beautiful walks in the world ( the youth hostel warden is right)! is from Trøllanes to the lighthouse at the northern end of the island. Up to the lighthouse, there is no danger even if you go alone. The view from the northern coast to the northern points of six islands is really spectacular.
Distances: to the east 26 km to Fugloy and to the west Skeiðið on Streymoy 23 km. Risin and Kellingin are at a distance of 16 km and can be seen quite well.
If you´re in Trøllanes on Saturdays you may have “too much” time before the small bus leaves. If you like very special experiences, walk through the 2248m long,  straight tunnel to Mikladalur… and walk without a torch. Concentrate on the other end  that you see far away and carry on walking. Your ears help you to walk always in the middle! About midway you will see a light on your left side. It’s a tunnel leading to Djúpidalur. I didn´t know what this road was like, so I didn´t walk these 220 m, but another time I would like to experience this too.
Traffic in the long tunnel will not be a problem; I don’t think that there are more than a dozen cars on Kalsoy. The walk takes about 20 minutes.
The old path between Trøllanes and Mikladalur is now considered to be dangerous.

Mikladalur, with many beautiful old houses and a wonderful view to the north end of Kunoy, is worth a visit. There is also a picturesque old water mill.
In beautiful weather make a helicopter trip (regular flights three times a week) to Svínoy and Fugloy. In the spring of 1999, this cost DKK220 and took about 40 – 50 minutes. Booking can be made in advance or the same morning from
0800,(Sunday from 12.00 noon ) by phoning 33 34 10, or you can walk to the heliport and ask if there’s a vacant seat to Hattarvík and back.
There is a good panoramic view of Klaksvík from the heliport, the reservoir and of course from Klakkur.
Anyway your youth hostel warden knows his region very well and loves it. He will have many other and for sure better proposals for you to make your stay on the Northern Islands unforgettable!
And now: enjoy your time here ……!
